Ever feel like you get off the phone after you were offered a job thinking “…I should have negotiated my wage, instead I just excitedly accepted their offer…” ? It happens to everyone! Here are some of our tips to BE PREPARED to jump on the negotiation when the offer is presented. Leave your tips in the comments below! Let’s get paid!
1. Do your research before your interview. Check websites like Glassdoor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, or Payscale to see what the going rate is for your position in your area.
2. Salary negotiation is not just a deposit in your bank account. Inquire about the perks that come with the company. Tuition reimbursement, training, professional development, company paid certifications!
3. Avoid accepting the first offer! Schedule another meeting or call with them in 24 hours and be prepared with your counter offer.
4. Thank them for their offer, but the pay is lower than the current market rate of “x dollars” per hour. Some companies don’t know that they are underpaying!
5. Ask for a salary range rather than a specific number. If glassdoor tells you the range is $11.00 – $18.00 per hour, ask for $17.00-$18.00 per hour. Choose the higher end of the full market range. Be prepared to be flexible.
6. If you have experience in the field always ask for more than what you made at your previous job. If you worked for 2 years at your previous postion and didn’t receive a raise, consider that when giving any information about your previous position. Remember they can not inquire to your previous employer about what you made.
7. Be gracious, but be confident in your delivery. They are just words, know your worth!
8. Ask what the outlook is for salary raises. Even if your salary is non negotiable it is important to know what the potential is for raises and promotion! This should be a big deciding factor in accepting the position!
